On Friday I went to give a little demostration on Google Docs over in the Chancellor’s office to someone who worked over there and it didnt work out as planned which was a bit of a pain. So number 1 on the agenda is to find out why it didnt work and tell the lady I demonstrated it to, make a help document for sharing files and shoot myself because it was so embarrassing!
Number 2 on the agenda is to investigate the portal. David Raines may be starting me on a project with the Portal but first I have to complete a task in ‘Portal Demystified’.
And then on the student side, I need to kick my bum into gear and get my assignments written!
Practically living in the library in my spare time!!
The only problem…the heating is up and down like crazy…I need heat!

I really should make an apology to David Raines, Creator of the Portal, for a previous post I wrote. He found my post and I don’t think he was too happy! So to prove that the Portal isn’t as useless as people may think, he helped me find useful documents =) And I have to say, they are a big help! I specifically wanted documents on the University Regulations with regard to Assignments etc and information on Plagiarism, and Dave found them for me.
(Please note, it was Dave who found them, so I feel there is still a problem with finding things. I find it to be very ‘busy’.)
Also, after looking around Blackboard Dave found some Communities that I could enrol to that give information on Plagiarism and Exam techniques. Absolutely brilliant!
The thing is…I never knew these existed. So for the past 2 years I have been completely oblivious to these guidelines because the academics didn’t tell us about them! Why they wouldn’t tell us about something like this is unbeknown to me.
Better late than never I suppose.

I discovered in my Introduction lecture on Wednesday that some tutors are not big fans of the Portal.
Because its not simple!
But, the tutor did have a point. It is extremely hard to find things that you need. It all seems to be hidden within menus and links where you wouldn’t expect it to be.
It is especially difficult for tutors to explain to students where these useful things are hidden. This has stemmed from my tutor trying to explain to us where to find Regulations relating to the University and Assessments.
It is a very helpful site, don’t get me wrong, its just the fact that it is hard to find bits and bobs.
Is there any way it can be made simpler?!
Oh and…where CAN I find the Regulations for the Uni??

I’ve re-re-done a past assignment today, a little bit more in-depth than when I did it the other day, I’ve literally used everything I can possibly think of that would help me to write a uni assignment.
I started with the unit handbook, which includes little questions that tend to give a brief background to the topic the assignment is on. I then moved onto Blackboard, where lecture slides are posted so you can access them whenever. Then I used the portal…what an absolute godsend!! Its brilliant for the E-Library links, e.g. Westlaw and Lexis Nexis, and for accessing the Library website too. The portal allows me to access E-Books and E-Journals and scan through books and journals on the internet, instead of having to check them out of the library.
I had a go at using google, but believe it or not they’re not specific…they have so many books and links none of them are as relevant as I need them to be.

I’m on my 3rd day now, I finished my induction this morning, last meeting with Mike Day.
Yesterday I spent the day looking at the portal and everything in it and google again.
I did the same today until I couldn’t find anything more to look at so I thought about giving ‘blogging’ another go! And it still doesn’t seem to be working…I can’t seem to write things about my day that I think people will want to read!!!
I hope that I’ll be given lots of work to do next week =) I much prefer being busy than not doing anything. I’ve kinda ran out of things to look at now! I was told to re-do a past assignment from uni by using the uni’s services and by using google too. I did a couple…well I say I did a couple, I researched stuff as if I was going to answer them, and I found that google was tonnes better in giving me more results in my searches (obviously) but in finding journal articles and e-books (the next BIG thing!) the portal was loads better because it has the uni library website and the e-library too.
But…I can’t think of anything else to do now!
I think I’ll go and make a cup of tea =)
